Impact strength of plastics - Charpy and Izod methods

DIN 53435, EN ISO 180, ISO 179
The impact strength of rigid plastics can be measured with the Charpy and Izod methods. In these tests, a pendulum is used to break the sample specimen. 10 specimens are needed for both tests. This measurement covers impact testing with either Charpy (ISO 179) or Izod (ISO 180). Please specify the preferred method upon ordering. The most significant difference between the Charpy and Izod methods is the placement of the specimen. In the Izod test, it is placed vertically and the notch is on the pendulum's side, while the Charpy test specimen is horizontal and the notch is on the opposite side of the pendulum. Testing can also be performed without a notch. Sample preparation can be purchased separately.

Heat Deflection Temperature (HDT) of plastics

ISO 75
Heat deflection temperature (HDT), also known as heat distortion temperature, describes the plastic's resistance to deformation by a given load at an elevated temperature. It can also give insight into the injection mouldability of the plastic. HDT is defined as the temperature where the sample specimen bends 0.25 mm under a given weight. It can be measured with either method A (1.80 MPa), B (0.45 MPa), or C (8.00 MPa) as per ISO 75. The load and specimen type are chosen according to the tested material. The test is always done as a duplicate.

Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA)

Dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) is a mechanical testing method used to characterize material properties as a function of temperature, time, frequency, stress, and atmosphere, or a combination of these parameters. DMA measures parameters for stiffness and damping. These are reported as moduli (stiffness) and loss tangent (damping). The moduli can be further divided into the storage modulus (E’) and loss modulus (E’’), which are the elastic and viscous components of the material, respectively. The ratio of loss modulus to storage modulus is a measure of the material's damping capacity. DMA can be used to study the following properties: Viscoelastic properties (E', E'', tan(δ)), Glass transition temperature (Tg), Secondary transitions (β & γ), Crystallization, Melting, Curing kinetics, Damping, Creep and stress relaxation, Mechanical properties (especially useful for small/complex samples), Long-term behaviour with Time-Temperature Superposition. The most common deformation modes are tensile, bending (3-point and cantilever), compression, and shear. The chosen deformation mode, conditions, and material properties selected for study will determine the difficulty and cost of the analysis.

Linear thermal expansion of solids with a rod dilatometer

ASTM E228
A dilatometer is used to determine the linear thermal expansion of a material as a function of temperature. The temperature range of the measurement is generally between 25 °C and 1,600 °C. There is also an option to perform the test in a cryogenic atmosphere, which ranges from -175 °C to 300 °C. The typical heating rate is 3 °C/min. As a result of the measurement, you will get the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) and the absolute change in sample length, both as a function of temperature. The testing can be performed in various atmospheres, including air, argon, CO2, N2, and O2. Please contact us to get a quote. The price will depend on the testing conditions, so please specify them as precisely as possible.

Air permeability of paper or board

Air permeability is an important property for some paper grades, such as paper bags that are filled industrially. Measurlabs offers air permeance testing with the Bendtsen and Gurley methods. The Bendtsen method (ISO 5636-3) is suitable for papers with permeance from 0.35 µm/(Pa*s) to 15 µm/(Pa*s). It is not suitable for rough-surfaced papers that cannot be securely clamped to the device. The results are reported in ml/min, expressing the average volume of air that passes through the material in a minute at elevated pressure. The Gurley Method (ISO 5636-5) is suitable for papers with permeance between 0.1 µm/(Pa*s) and 100 µm/(Pa*s). The test may also be used to determine the air resistance of paper and board. In the Gurley test, the time it takes for a certain volume of air to pass through the paper at a certain pressure is measured in seconds.

Creep and stress rupture of metals by ISO 204 and ASTM E139

ASTM E139, ISO 204
Creep testing is used to monitor the amount of deformation under a constant load over a set period. It allows us to determine how much a material will deform under a specific load at a given temperature. Stress rupture testing is used to determine the time required for a fracture to occur under constant stress. It provides information on how long a material will last under specific loads and temperatures. Both of these tests are essential in determining the material's load-carrying capacity. The tests are performed according to ISO 204 or ASTM E139 standards at temperatures up to 1,250 °C. There are several testing options under ISO 204 and ASTM E139: Uninterrupted creep tests, where elongation is monitored continuously, Interrupted creep tests, where elongation is measured periodically, Stress rupture tests, where the time to fracture is measured, Verification tests to confirm that the material withstands a given force for a predetermined time without fracturing. Pricing depends on the temperature, load, and test duration. Please contact our experts for a quote.

Reusability testing of food packaging according to the SUP Directive

EN 1186-1, EN 1186-2, EN 1186-3, …
This analysis package is intended to determine if food packaging and beverage bottles can be considered reusable in the framework of the Single-Use Plastic (SUP) Directive (Directive (EU) 2019/904). The following tests are included: Overall migration testing for repeated use with 10% ethanol, 3% acetic acid, and olive oil (simulants A, B, and D2), Dishwasher resistance testing according to EN 12875-1 with 25 wash cycles. The EU Commission’s interpretations of the SUP legislation declare that reusability can evaluated using test method EN 12875-1 (Mechanical dishwashing resistance of utensils). If plastic articles can be washed 25 times in a dishwasher, they can be considered to have been designed for multiple uses without losing their effectiveness and properties. Additionally, food packaging and beverage bottles tested for single-use are not compliant for reuse according to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Hence, the test package includes overall migration testing for repeated use to ensure that the article remains inert when reused. By default, testing is done to establish compliance with all types of foods (i.e., moist and dry foods, acidic and non-acidic, fatty foods). Note: this test package is only applicable for articles that have already been tested for food contact as single-use articles. This does not constitute a full test package for compliance according to Regulation (EU) No 10/2011. Please consult our experts for further support.
