Microplastics in blood and other samples of human origin
Quantification and characterization of microplastics present in biological samples of human origin with FTIR microspectroscopy (µFTIR). The results will include the number of microplastic particles per 1 mL of sample, as well as information on plastic types and particle size in categories (e.g., 10–50 µm, 50–100 µm, 100–500 µm, and > 500 µm).
Due to the complex matrix, the appropriate digestion, homogenization, and filtration steps will be decided on a case-by-case basis. The extent of sample preparation required may affect the price.
In addition to the µFTIR method, we offer microplastic analyses with pyrolysis-GC/MS, which does not provide particle size information but can quantify the total concentration of certain types of plastics.
Samples of human origin, including blood, must typically be packed and shipped with dry ice. We offer the necessary logistics services and support for handling these kinds of samples.
