Nutritional analysis of food (EU 1169/2011) (BIG 8 - including dietary fiber)

The nutrition declaration should appear on the label of most packaged foodstuffs. Food Information Regulation (EU) 1169/2011 defines what information must appear on the label.

In the nutritional analysis package, the following parameters will be determined:

  • Moisture

  • Ash

  • Total fat (solvent extraction following acid hydrolysis)

  • Fatty acid composition (including sum parameter for saturated fatty acids and saturated fat)

  • Protein (Kjeldahl method)

  • Sugar profile (HPAEC-PAD method) including fructose, glucose, lactose, maltose, sucrose

  • Dietary fiber (high molecular weight dietary fibre, method based on AOAC 991.43)

  • Sodium (Na) (ICP-OES method)

  • NaCl calculated from sodium (Na)

  • Calculated carbohydrate and energy content

The used methods can be changed according the type of food product to include relevant parameters like galactose for sugar profile in certain milk products. For the dietary fiber, methods to include soluble dietary fibre are also available, such as methods based on AOAC 2017.16.
