Applications of nanomaterial analysis
Nanomaterials require characterization regardless of the industry for product optimization purposes. In addition, some uses are only allowed when authorized by the relevant authorities, such as the European Commission. For example, nanomaterials used in cosmetics as colorants, UV filters, or preservatives must be listed in the EU Cosmetics Regulation and nanoform food ingredients in the Novel Food Regulation.
New nanomaterials may be authorized as novel foods after they have passed a rigorous safety assessment by EFSA (European Food Safety Authority). This requires a comprehensive set of information to be submitted on the physical, chemical, and toxicological properties of the material. In addition, conventional powders used in food production may require testing to rule out the presence of nanoparticles.

Nanomaterial characterization techniques
Measurlabs offers a wide range of analytical methods for characterizing the physical and chemical properties of different types of nanomaterials. The following are just a few examples:
XRF, ICP-MS, SEM-EDX, and XPS for elemental composition determination
NMR and UV-VIS for molecular composition determination
TEM, SEM, and SAXS for imaging, particle size distribution analysis, and morphology determination
XRD for crystallinity analysis
Nanoparticle tracking analysis for characterizing the physical properties of particles
Combination of gas adsorption and He pycnometry for VSSA measurement
