Environmental analysis services

Environmental analyses are performed to assess the quality of natural samples like water, soil, air, and sediment by screening them for heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants, and other contaminants. Measurlabs provides environmental laboratory services with a wide range of analysis methods.

Analysis of environmental pollutants

Environmental testing often focuses on detecting heavy metals, PFAS and PAH compounds, VOCs, dioxins, and other toxic substances in water, soil, sediment, air, biochar, or waste materials. Some of the popular environmental pollutant screening options we offer include the following:

A variety of heavy metal screening analyses with ICP-OES, ICP-MS, and ICP-SFMS methods are also available. You can find more information about popular tests through the icons below.

Elemental analysis of natural water with ICP-MS and AFS

EN ISO 17294-2, EN ISO 178 52, EN 16192, …
Simultaneous determination of the following elements in water samples with the ICP-MS technique (AFS is used for Hg): Element LOQ (µg/L) Ag 1 Al 5 As 1 B 10 Ba 0.5 Be 0.2 Ca 50 Cd 0.02 Co 0.5 Cr 0.2 Cu 1 Fe 2 Hg 0.005 K 50 Li 1 Mg 3 Mn 0.5 Mo 1 Na 30 Ni 2 P 50 Pb 0.5 Se 1 Sn 1 Ti 1 Tl 0.5 U 0.1 V 1 Zn 2 The sample is homogenized and acidified (HNO3), after which the analysis is performed from the liquid phase. The displayed price applies to natural waters (for example, river or lake water). If the sample contains a lot of solids or the matrix is otherwise significantly different from natural water (for example, wastewater and industrial water), different analysis methods need to be used, which will affect the price and the quantification limits. The concentration of each element is reported in µg/l.

Semi-quantitative elemental screening with ICP-SFMS and ICP-AES

This metal screening analysis includes the semi-quantitative determination of 70 elements. The method can be used, for example, to determine the background concentrations of metals in environmental samples or to study the elemental distribution of unknown samples. Screening is also often performed to assess which metals should be analyzed by a quantitative method. The measurement is performed using a high-resolution ICP-MS technique (ICP-SFMS), which can identify very low elemental concentrations. A semi-quantitative determination of the following elements is included: Ag, Al, As, Au, B, Ba, Be, Bi, Br, Ca, Cd, Ce, Co, Cr, Cs, Cu, Dy, Er, Eu, Fe, Ga, Gd, Ge, Hf, Hg, Ho, I, Ir, K, La, Lu, Mg, Mn, Mo, Na, Nb, Nd, Ni, Os, P, Pb, Pd, Pr, Pt, Rb, Re, Rh, Ru, S, Sb, Sc, Se, Si, Sm, Sn, Sr, Ta, Tb, Te, Th, Ti, Tl, Tm, U, V, W, Y, Yb, Zn and Zr. However, please note that some elements may not be determinable due to matrix interference. During this semi-quantitative analysis, the instrument is calibrated for about 30 elements. The rest of the analytes are quantified using sensitivity factors for calibrated elements with similar mass and first ionization potential, considering isotope abundances. Quantitative analysis is also available at an additional price. During this analysis, all elements are calibrated (excluding halogens and Os). Please ask for an offer for this service.

Specialty analyses: microplastics and eDNA testing

In addition to routine pollutant screening, Measurlabs offers a wide range of testing options in emerging analysis fields, such as microplastics and eDNA analysis. Our testing options for microplastics present in environmental samples include:

Our eDNA analysis services can be used to detect the presence of various animal, microbe, and fungi species indirectly from environmental samples. This presents a less intrusive, more efficient alternative to direct observation of living organisms in nature. You can read more about the potential of eDNA analysis on our blog or contact our experts to request a quote.
