Perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in food
The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has concluded that certain perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) such as PFOS, PFOA, PFNA, and PFHxS can cause adverse effects on serum cholesterol, the liver and the immune system, and birth weight. To minimize human exposure to perfluoroalkyl substances through the diet, the European Union has set limits on PFAS concentrations in several types of food. According to Commission Regulation (EU) 2022/2388, the following products may require testing: • Eggs • Fishery products • Meat This PFAS testing package includes the analysis of the following substances, for which maximum levels are set in EU legislation: • Heptadecafluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) [CAS: 2795-39-3] • Pentadecafluorooctanoic acid hydrate (PFOA), linear [CAS: 335-67-1] • Perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) [CAS: 375-95-1] • Perfluorohexanesulfonic acid potassium salt (PFHxS) [CAS: 3871-99-6] In addition, the concentrations of 21 other PFAS compounds are determined.
