EN ISO 354: Sound absorption testing in a reverberation room
The ISO 354 method is intended for assessing the sound-absorbing characteristics of acoustic panels and other construction materials used to control reverberation, such as gypsum board thermal/acoustic insulation composite panels (EN 13950) and factory-made mineral wool thermal insulation products (EN 13162).
Testing is conducted in a reverberation chamber, and the sample is installed directly on the chamber floor (type A mounting in Annex B to ISO 354). Please ask about the availability of other mounting types.
The reverberation time of the room is measured first as empty, then with the specimen installed, in one-third-octave bands with center frequencies of 100–5,000 Hz. Temperature and relative humidity are controlled as far as practical and recorded to account for their effect on the measured reverberation times.
The difference between the reverberation time in an empty chamber and in a chamber with the specimen installed gives the equivalent sound absorption area of the specimen. The sound absorption coefficient (αs) of the material is calculated from this value by dividing it by the test specimen area. A sound absorption rating according to ISO 11654 can be reported in addition to the coefficient.
