EN 1604: Dimensional stability under specified temperature and humidity conditions

Dimensional stability is an essential product characteristic of factory-made thermal insulation products, such as EPS, XPS, and mineral wool boards.

In the EN 1604 test, the specimens are first conditioned at (23 ± 2) °C and (50 ± 5)% RH to ensure that length, width, and thickness are stabilized. They are then exposed to elevated temperature and humidity, typically for 48 hours, after which the dimensions are measured again and any changes reported as percentages.

The most typical temperature/humidity regime is 70 °C and 90% RH, as several harmonized European product standards (e.g., EN 13162, EN 13163, and EN 13164) state that testing under other exposure regimes is not necessary if these conditions are used. The results are expressed as DS(70, 90)i, where i is the declared dimensional stability level.
