Water content determination of petroleum products with Karl-Fischer titration

Karl Fischer titration is a classic titration method in chemical analysis that uses coulometric or volumetric titration to determine trace amounts of water in a sample.

This analysis is conducted according to ASTM D6304, EN ISO 12937, or DIN 51777 Verfahren A, with the method selected based on sample suitability. Results are reported as numerical values in mg/kg.

The test is best suited for petroleum products and pyrolysis oils with a final boiling point below 390 °C, although samples with a higher boiling point can also be analyzed.

Please note that aldehydes and/or ketones in the sample may cause interferences in the KF titration. If the sample material includes these substances, please notify us upon requesting an offer.
