Pentachlorophenol (PCP) content in paper and board
Pentachlorophenol (PCP, CAS 87-86-5) is a pesticide and wood preservative classified as a persistent organic pollutant under the EU POPs Regulation and therefore banned in products and materials. It may, however, be present as a contaminant in articles that contain recycled fibers.
By default, the analysis is conducted from an aqueous extract of paper and board. The substance has restrictions under at least the following regulations and guidelines:
Regulation / guideline | Scope of materials | Region | Limit | Reference method |
|---|---|---|---|---|
DGCCRF document MCDA sheet n°4 (V02 – 01/01/2019) | All paper and board | France | ≤ 0.1 mg/kg of paper | ISO 15320 |
Tissue papers | - | ≤ 0.15 mg/kg of paper | ISO 15320 | |
Resolution ResAP(2002)1 | All paper and board | EU | ≤ 0.15 mg/kg of paper | ISO 15320 |
This analysis was originally developed for food contact materials, but it applies to all kinds of pulp, paper, and board.
