Biobased content according to EN 16785-1
Measurement of biobased content according to EN 16785-1 by liquid scintillation spectrometry (LSC) and elemental analysis (C, H, N, O). The standard is applicable to any solid, liquid, or gaseous product containing carbon, provided that a producer statement on the elemental composition and biobased content of the product is available.
Unlike EN 16640, ISO 16620-2, and ASTM D6866, which determine biobased carbon content only, EN 16785-1 determines the overall biobased content of a product, expressed as a percentage of total mass. This distinction matters because carbon accounts for only a fraction of biomass; a product with a high biobased carbon content may have a lower or higher biobased mass content depending on its elemental composition.
Because the method requires producer input on elemental composition, it is not suitable for independent third-party evaluation of products with an unknown composition. For finished products where this information is unavailable, EN 16640, ISO 16620-2, or ASTM D6866 are more appropriate.
Please note that Measurlabs currently offers testing according to EN 16785-1 for R&D purposes rather than biobased content certification.
