UL 94 testing for plastic flammability rating

UL 94 flammability tests are conducted on plastic materials and parts to evaluate their fire resistance and classify them in terms of their burning characteristics. We offer testing to help ensure your material meets the required flammability criteria for its intended application.

When is testing needed?

Flame-retardant plastics are required in several industries where materials are likely to encounter high levels of thermal stress or where the spread of fire would cause a serious safety hazard. Some examples of applications where fire resistance is paramount include construction materials, plane and car interiors, and insulators and casings in electronic products.

UL 94 testing plays a key role in ensuring and demonstrating that plastic materials used in such applications fulfill strict, internationally recognized fire safety criteria.

UL 94 flammability ratings

Plastic parts and materials can be categorized into twelve classes based on the type of material and the results of UL 94 flammability tests. The following six classes (in ascending order of flame-retardancy) apply to solid and cellular plastics:

  • HB

  • V2

  • V1

  • V0

  • 5VB

  • 5VA

Foamed plastics can be classified as HBF, HF-2, and HF-1, while the last three classes (VTM-2, VTM-1, and VTM-0) apply to thin films unable to support themselves in a horizontal position.

Our UL 94 testing solutions

Measurlabs offers the following UL 94 tests for assessing the flammability characteristics of plastic materials:

We also offer a range of other fire testing services, including IMO FTP code tests for materials used on ships and EN 45545-2 tests for railway materials. Do not hesitate to contact us to discuss your company’s testing needs.
